The award winning Disney Movie turned broadway play ”The Lion King” brought the audience to their feet Wednesday at the Civic Theater in downtown San Diego. Directed by Julie Taymor and produced by Peter Schneider and Thomas Schumacher the play lived up to its high expectations. The famous lyrics by Elton John and Tom Rice make this musical one of the best yet.

From the beginning to the end the performance was amazing to watch. The animals, ranging from elephants to leaping antelope were all functioned by people in costumes. But you couldn’t tell, it looked more like the San Diego Zoo than a theater.

Rafiki played by Phindile Mkhize was a crowd favorite for her humor and incredible voice. The famous Timon played by Tyler Muree and Pumba played by Bob Amaral were also popular with the audience. The play was a crowd favorite, everyone cheered after every scene and standing ovations were given until hands hurt from clapping.
