As far as club controversy goes, the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is usually at the forefront.
After taking a one-year hiatus this previous year, the club returns with more support than it originally had two years ago. President of GSA, Alyson Feldmier, was excited to discuss the club changes.
“I think it was kind of like a power struggle going on before. There was not as much organization and less drive that needed to be put in,” Feldmier said.
Though it is unclear what caused the club to fall into nonexistence last year, Feldmier had plenty of reason to bring it back. As a passionate activist for gay rights , she believes that tolerance is something to be spread worldwide.
“I know that on this campus there are a lot of people that are very quiet about their sexuality, however, I think this campus has had a very unique thing where it is a lot more accepting than other campuses,” Feldmier said.
The Junior President is encouraging people of all types to get involved, regardless of their sexual preference. Some students may not know that it is not only a club for those who are homosexual, but also bisexual, transgender, and the more popular sexuality that it at times people forget, heterosexuality.
“I want people to understand that the word ’straight’ is in that title It’s not just for gay people. A lot of people come up to me and say ‘I’d love to be a part of it, I’d love to help your guys out, but I’m not gay,’” Feldmier said.
In the end, however, the mood on campus seems to be cheerful and accepting towards the student members of Gay-Straight Alliance. The club plans to host its annual Day of Silence within the year, sending a message to end closeted homosexuality, followed by a Day of Speech or Day of Recognition. GSA Club meets in room 410 every two, four, six block Friday.
